Highly detailed pics tell the story here.  This is a Rare acquisition.  No major issues… See details below.
Note:
Many of these drums which you may come across, will have major body dings and dents, scratches, delamination of the body or splinters on the hoops etc…. and overall surface loss issues because of rough wear, as these drums certainly endured during use in events.   Not this one…. well taken care of, with only miniscule hoop use indents from the thumb rods, almost impossible to see.   Very little common light surface scratches on the body.  Look close at the picture of the lower section of the VFW emblem and you can see the inherent age crazing in the mahagony, visible in other pictures as well.  A true piece of American History!
The collector who had this noted it came from Post 295, St. Paul, MN. and he has had this put away for many years since he acquired it.
Pertinent Details & Info:
Extensive research by matching the badge positioning (over the strainer) and the Hasp Snap Key #447 (on the upper hoop) as well as the Spread Strainer #673, indicates this as a 1936 “Corporal” by Slingerland.  The 1936′ catalog clip is shown for this model, as you can see in the pictures, and it does differ from the Boy Scout Model, in that… the core is layered mahogany, not mahogany finish. And, it should be noted that the seam is perfect.  Inside is clean as ever… again, well taken care of.   It should be noted that either of the Scout or the Corporal came with or without center supports.  In the case of the Scout it was an option to include them; with the Corporal, it was an option to not include them.  This one does not carry that option.  The previous owner had new heads installed, as you can see.  The snare and all hardware are original.   I would have preferred the old ones, but he thought he was selling to someone who would use it.  Sorry.   However, this is a great piece of history.
